Rahul Dravid and Industry figure-heads see eye-to-eye
on ‘Challenges in Team Building and Talent Management’
Bangalore, 24th February 2007: Skyline Constructions and Housing Pvt. Ltd. launched ‘Leadership in Counsel’,a knowledge dissemination series for Senior Management of companies across industries. The first in this thought leadership series, saw an absorbing discussion on ‘Challenges in Team Building and Talent Management’ where Industry Captains, spearheaded by Mr. Rahul Dravid, Captain, Indian Cricket Team and Brand Ambassador of Skyline Constructions, tried to decipher the intricacies involved in handling teams and nurturing talent.
Set in Skyline’s flagship property called Skyline Beverly Hills, which will soon be the new home of Rahul Dravid, the Panel discussion saw over 200 senior corporates representing various industry verticals listening to the panelists in rapt attention.
Speaking on the relevance of Team Building and Talent Management in the context of Indian cricket, Rahul Dravid, said, “The best way to lead a team is to evolve a consensus in the team on critical parameters. While arriving at the ‘non-negotiables’ in a team, it is important to ensure that each member in the team subscribes to the view, instead of merely imposing rules on the team”.
Dravid looked to be in great form, as he handled queries from the panel, audience and media with great aplomb. Talking on team motivation, he said, “You do not need bigger motivation than playing for the country. Every player knows that he represents the aspirations of his country, state, city, friends and family. While this is enough to motivate a player to perform, it is also important to keep asking oneself, ‘where one stands in the history of the game’”.
Mr. Avinash Prabhu, MD, Skyline Constructions, in his opening remarks, said, “In the fast growing Indian economy, we have identified that the key requirement and need of the hour in every sector today is fine leadership. It will be Skyline Constructions’ constant endeavour to seek guidance from personalities who have proven their mettle across industries, through forums like ‘Leadership in Counsel’. We hope to create more such platforms for industry interaction, at frequent intervals”
Ms. Hema Ravichandar, Strategic HR Advisory, and formerly, Head HR of Infosys, noted, “Low motivational level is usually a consequence of either lack of competence or lack of commitment. To build a sense of motivation in a team, it is important to have a common / shared vision, which is clearly communicated.” Speaking on talent scarcity, “India can use its population to its advantage. But, it is important to understand that there is a ‘demographic divide’, and need to ensure that it does not become a ‘demographic disaster’”.
Mr. Bhaskar Pramanik, Managing Director, Sun Microsystems, elaborating on enhancing performance levels in people, said, “It is always important to raise the bar to higher standards of performance and challenge people continuously, to keep the high performers in an organization motivated. In my understanding, there are three things that motivate people – Affiliation, Achievement and Power. Leaders need to identify the right triggers in each team member, so that the team functions effectively”.
Mr. Dilip Mehta, Management Consultant and Director, Skyline Constructions, underlining the importance of shared vision said that, “The best example of a highest level of motivation in an organization is the Indian military forces where a 25 year old earning a meager amount is ready to sacrifice his life for the country. Organisations need to strive hard to bring about this kind of passion in individuals and teams, which is possible only if there is shared vision amongst team members”.
But, the star of the evening was certainly Rahul Dravid. He was at his elegant best when he said, “The toughest thing for me as a captain is to tell a player that he is not in the playing eleven. However, this can be made simpler by being completely honest and upfront about the decision by placing all the facts about the dropped on the table while communicating the tough decision to him, and guiding him on what will help him get back to a team. It is important to let the young players know that someone cares about them.”
In this first of its kind coming together of the Indian Cricket Captain with several Industry Captains and Experts, to discuss various issues at a cerebral level, the elite panel discussed various issues on Human Resource Management including Leadership, Motivation, Crisis management, Talent scarcity and Remuneration. The experts concluded that the principles of Team Building and Talent Management will remain the same across all verticals.
The discussion was moderated by Mr. Ramanunjam Sridhar, CEO, Brand-comm
